Tehachapi’s Relay For Life gains momentum; set for June 9

Fundraising for Tehachapi’s Relay For Life, coming up on June 9, is off to a running start with more than $30,000 raised to date for the American Cancer Society’s ongoing quest for a cure.
“Last year we had 677 individuals

Duggins said there are now 350 registered cancer survivors, conspicuously more than last year’s total of 315. Each and every triumphant survivor demonstrates that the American Cancer Society truly is the “Official Sponsor of Birthdays.”

“Each year more people are hearing about us and signing up,” Duggins said adding, “it’s a great thing. This is what we’re working for — more survivors!”

All survivors are invited to attend a pre-relay “Survivors Social” at Centennial Plaza on Green Street at 6 p.m. on June 11. Birthday cake will be served and candles will be lit in a celebration of life and cancer’s defeat.

“It’s a chance to honor them.

Generous sponsorships ‘TAARget Cancer’

Duggins said that generous event sponsorships are helping to achieve this year’s goal, expressing gratitude for a $5,000 donation received last week from the Tehachapi Area Association of Realtors (TAAR).

“We are just so, so blessed to be in this community,” Duggins said. “Especially with the economy as tight as it’s been it’s still a very giving community.”

This year TAAR has inspired all local realtors to “team up” in a unified fight against cancer by pooling their resources to form the team “Tehachapi Realtors TAARget Cancer.”

Team Captain Tammy Wallace,
Banded Skirt a past president of TAAR, has been participating in the local relay since its inception eight years ago. The team’s goal is to raise $20,000 for Relay For Life.

“Every time I talk about it I start crying,” Wallace said apologetically. “My dad had cancer and my husband had cancer, and my best friend’s 9-year-old granddaughter died in November of leukemia. It’s just very personal to me.”

Wallace has challenged every local realtor to buy a $10 luminaria every time they close an escrow.

“You’d be surprised how they stack up,” Wallace said.

At each Relay For Life event, the luminaria ceremony often features thousands of individually decorated paper memorials honoring loved ones that have been affected by cancer. After dark, the bags are illuminated with glow sticks, shining a solemn but unified light of hope for a cure that will one day destroy cancer.

It’s always personal

Any size donation to ACS gives the donor a chance to share a photo that sums up, “Why I Relay,” because when it comes to cancer, it’s always “personal.”

All around town, registered teams are holding fundraisers that include everything from selling frozen cinnamon rolls, car washes, yard sales, 50/50 raffles and other prize drawings.

The first annual Relay For Life Golf Tournament is coming up on May 28, at Horse Thief Golf Course. For more information see this week’s “Happenings” section or contact Bill Duggins at 823-8170 or Susan Mueller at 822-8017.

Every single donation, no matter the size, helps raise funds and awareness for cancer research and anyone can sign up to participate online or through a registered team or individual.

Duggins also said that teams can go to the Relay website to get fresh ideas for fundraisers. Business card ads for publication in the event program are available for a $100 donation, and a variety of event sponsorship opportunities are still available.
